The World of Balinor: Present Day
The gods have been silent for centuries, their direct influence on the world of Balinor now only a distant memory. The land, once shaped and ruled by divine hands, has settled into a new era where the children of the gods and humans carve their own destinies. The remnants of the gods' power and their ancient conflicts still ripple through the lives of Balinor's inhabitants, but now, the world is governed by the ambitions and struggles of its mortal and semi-divine races.
The Heavens and the Floating Isles
The floating isles, home to the Hikari, children of the Sun-God, are majestic islands in the sky. With golden spires and lush gardens basking in eternal sunlight, the Hikari, gifted with beauty, grace, and flight, rule with superiority. They use advanced technologies and magics to uphold the Sun-God's will.
Day-born children from the lowlands are raised here to become leaders, scholars, and warriors. Despite their privilege, the Hikari's arrogance causes tension with other races of Balinor. Whispers of rebellion and dissatisfaction emerge, questioning their rigid doctrines.
The Lowlands and the Forests
Below the floating isles lie the lowlands, home to the Okami, children of the Wolf-God. These wild lands are inhabited by Okami who live in harmony with nature, valuing strength, honor, and community.
Life is harsh, with Okami hunting, farming, and crafting. Despite the Sun-God's curse, they form tight-knit tribes inspired by the Wolf-God's bravery to resist Hikari oppression.
The Okami respect yokai spirits, who teach them ancient knowledge and magic. Some tribes secretly prepare to challenge the Hikari's dominance and restore balance to Balinor.
The Oceans and the Depths
The ocean realms, ruled by Umimizu's descendants, are dangerous and mysterious. The fierce Ebisu and Mizuchi, born from her scales, populate these seas. They excel in combat and deeply resent the Hikari.
Their society thrives underwater and on shores, with warriors and navigators exploring for ancient artifacts. They trade with the Okami and sometimes raid the floating isles. Umimizu's descendants seek to avenge their goddess and overthrow the Hikari.
The Role of Helians
Helians, created by Helios, the God of Resilience and Knowledge, are crucial to Balinor. Molded from clay and Helios' hair, they initially cared for the gods' children but have since developed respected societies, known for adaptability and resilience.
Serving as advisors, assistants, and laborers, Helians bridge gaps between divine children, maintaining harmony. They build unique cities and thrive in diverse environments.
Some Helians align with the Hikari for privileges, while others live with the Okami or ally with oceanic races. Their versatility makes them valuable allies and formidable foes. As rebellion whispers grow, many Helians must choose between safety in compliance and the perilous path of resistance.
A World on the Brink
Balinor stands at the brink of change. The silence of the gods has left a void that the races of the world are eager to fill. The Hikari's rule is increasingly challenged by the growing unrest among the Okami and the oceanic races. Humans, with their unique position and resilience, play a pivotal role in the unfolding drama. As tensions rise and old grudges resurface, the world of Balinor teeters on the edge of a new era. The choices made by its inhabitants will shape the destiny of the land, for better or worse.
In the midst of this turmoil, one question remains: Will the gods ever return to guide their children, or has Balinor truly entered an age where mortals and demi-gods must forge their own path?
