Children of the Wolf-God (Okami)

When the Sun-God cast the Wolf-God into the darkness and split his head into three, blood rained from the heavens. Each drop created a mortal child of the Wolf-God. They generally refer to their kind as the Okami. The Okami are ruled by the immortal Empress, daughter of the Wolf-God. They are seen as lessers to the other children of the gods. While humans are just below them in terms of hierarchy, they are seen as the lowest of races, especially to the children of the sun. Children born at night are born as children of the Wolf-God. Each of the Okami has an alpha; however, the daughter of the Wolf-God is considered alpha over all. The genes of the Hikari and Okami are the strongest of all races, so should either race pair with a human or child of the sea, the child will either be born as a Hikari or Okami depending on the time of day. However, there is always a rare chance that the pair will give birth to a Yokai.

Appearance:

The Okami, commonly known as Wolf People, are renowned for their distinctive lupine traits. They feature pointed ears, sharp canine teeth, and eyes that gleam in the darkness. Their skin and eyes come in various natural hues, while their hair and fur range from snowy white to midnight black and other natural colors, often reflecting their elemental affinity and status within the pack. Agile and robust, the Okami possess remarkable speed and endurance. They typically live up to 150 years, with heights ranging from 6 to 8 feet.

Culture and Society:

Okami society is deeply rooted in loyalty, honor, and the pack mentality. They live in tightly-knit communities that function almost like extended families, each member playing a crucial role in the survival and prosperity of the group. Respect for elders and those who have proven their prowess in battle or wisdom is paramount. Rituals and festivals often involve moonlit ceremonies, hunting competitions, and storytelling sessions that preserve their rich oral history.

History:

The most notable and tragic tale in Okami history involves Masumi, a Hikari woman, and Haru, a blind Okami. Their love story defied the Sun-God's decree against such unions, leading to a brutal retribution by the Sun-God's Harpies. Masumi was slain, and her unborn child torn from her womb, a heartbreaking event that led Haru to bury her and take up residence as a cemetery groundskeeper until he died of heartbreak. This tragedy prompted the Okami to establish a sacred land where Okami and Hikari pairs could live peacefully, fiercely protected by Yokai and Okami alike.

Subraces

Hiretsuna

The most common of the Okami, the Hiretsuna are born with a more human appearance but possess wolf-like features such as ears, tail, claws, and fangs. Most Hiretsuna reside in towns or dwellings, rarely living in the wild. They can understand both the wolf tongue and Common, though they are incapable of speaking in the wolf tongue. Hiretsuna are often involved in law enforcement and run the majority of businesses in town. Many young female Hiretsuna are trained to become shrine maidens to care for and protect the shrines to their Mother Luna, the hidden Father Okami shrine, and the many shrines of the Yokai. Young male Hiretsuna typically train in the military or law enforcement.

Monsu

The least common of the Okami, Monsu have the appearance of anthropomorphic wolves but share the temperament of the Hiretsuna. They are capable of speaking both wolf tongue and Common, though their speech may be more limited and uncivilized unless they have received some education. Monsu can live in villages, on farms in the outskirts, or roam the forests in packs. Many Monsu are talented blacksmiths, guards, and hunters when they reside near towns. They are generally treated as bastardized versions of the Okami by the Hikari and often harbor deep hatred or dislike for the Hikari and their ilk, even the friendly Hikari traders that visit the village occasionally.

Stereotypes on Miscegenation
(mixed race pairings)

The Okami are generally accepting of mixed-race pairings, though a few exceptions remain. Unions with humans are common and widely embraced, often forging strong alliances between human villages and Okami packs. Relationships with Sun Children (Hikari), however, are rare and shadowed by a history of tragedy and distrust. To protect those who defy these old tensions, the Okami have established a hidden sanctuary where such pairs can live free from judgment.

Pairings with Children of the Sea (Umimizu) are exceedingly rare due to stark environmental differences. In the rare event of a mixed-race child, the offspring will be born as either an Okami or a Hikari—determined not by lineage, but by the time of birth. A child born during the day will be Hikari; one born at night will be Okami.

The Feral Rite

The Feral Rite is a sacred and ancient ritual through which the Wolf-God, Okami, bestows upon his chosen ones the blessing to assume the feral form of a wolf or a wolflike being. This powerful transformation is a mark of hhonourand strength, reserved only for those whom Okami deems worthy. The rite is a profound ceremony, deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of the Okami people.
